When It's All For The Birds

Dark-eyed Junco
Once you start, you can't stop until milder weather returns - bird feeding, that is. This winter, we had lots of activity at the bird feeder, and now the feeding frenzy has multiplied because many birds have already returned from warmer regions. Feeding will stop once the feed runs out in our house, and by early May we should have plenty of food in the natural food chain (and I hope these birds are helping in my garden by eating all the insect pests!). Also, I think some of the birds, especially a couple of Mourning Doves, look a little chunky from sitting under the bird feeder all day. Looks like I am turning into a German Oma, stuffing everyone's face! For my German readers, the expression "it's all for the birds" means something like "das ist fuer die Katz".
Maryland has a wonderful variety of birds, and they are great motives for painting if you are quick painter (I am helping myself to photographs, though - they are too fast and skittish). Our place has also turned into kind of a bird sanctuary over the years. Here is my ink pen, watercolor and color pencil sketch from my garden notebook. More will follow soon!
