The Deadwood area kept our attention for a few more days. The (nearly) ghost town of Galena was built during the 1876 gold rush and besides abandoned buildings, still has some residents and a beautifully restored school house. One of the locals showed us around and they even had a German fairy tail book in the school room. The Eagle Cliff trail system is set up for hikers, riders and cross country skiers, and allows for shorter and longer hikes through meadows and pine forests, depending on which one of the connected trails you choose. We started at the Bratwurst trailhead but there was no sausage to be found anywhere in the vicinity. The Lead Mining Museum with a replica of the Homestake Gold Mine is worth a visit. Starting on Day 17, we worked our way back east with two nights in Sioux City, Nebraska (and Iowa), with a stop a the Akta Lakota Museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center. Our drive home went through Illinois and Ohio, and we arrived safe and sound in Maryland on Day 21, after 23 hours of driving time, covering 1,500 miles. This trip was absolutely epic and we would love to come back, there is so much more to see and do!
