To our surprise, there are several beautiful lakes tucked away in Custer State Park in the Black Hills. Sylvan Lake with its rocky outcroppings and beautiful path around the lake shore is definitely worth a stop for a leisurely stroll.
Custer State Park as well as Wind Cave National Park are home to approx. 1600 bison altogether. This is just a small remnant compared to the 30 to 60 million bison who once roamed the plains and were hunted to almost extinction. Bison play a crucial role in the prairie ecosystem and provided Indians with many essentials to survive this harsh environment. Remember, don't pet these fluffy cows, they weigh over a ton and can run 35 mph. We kept a respectful distance at all times.
